Heading into the holiday week many moviegoers headed to the theater to catapult the domestic box office earnings over the $10 billion dollar mark for the year. As expected TRON: Legacy dominated the box office earnings by hauling in over $43 million in its opening weekend. Disney is quite pleased with the opening weekend as the hardcore TRON fans seemed to enjoy the sequel starring Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund. Look for this film to continue performing well with the male crowd in their 20’s during the upcoming weeks.
Grabbing the second place spot for the three day weekend was Yogi Bear starring Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake and Anna Faris. The film brought in just over $16 million during the opening weekend and should have a little strength left during the upcoming holiday weeks. The film will have to compete for the family box office dollars with Disney’s Tangled.
Settling into the third spot for the weekend was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader pulling in another $12 million bringing the films two week total to $42.7 million. The fantasy film starring Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley performed well considering the fantasy films TRON: Legacy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I both providing healthy competition.
The star studded film How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson didn’t have enough to bring audiences out for the opening weekend only generating $7.6 million. That cash won’t even pay the salary of one of the actors identified above. Time will tell if couples will head out to the theaters over the following weeks to help this film hit its numbers.
