Weekend Box Office Results for January 30th, 2011

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Another great weekend of new movies is in the books and so goes January 2011.  Overall the first month of 2011 had some good movies to offer and we are looking for more great things to come from the new year.  Check out the top performing movies for the weekend of January 30th, 2011 below.

Grabbing the top box office position in its opening weekend was the Anthony Hopkins horrific thriller The Rite.  Hopkins returns with a Silence of the Lambs type performance as he plays the creepy Father Lucas Trevant who travels to Italy to study at an exorcism school.  The Rite looks to have pulled in just over $15 million in its opening weekend.  The word of mouth on this film is mixed but the genre is also not necessarily popular across all movie going demographics.  Check out this film if you are looking for some edge of your seat action.

In its second weekend at the box office Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman’s No Strings Attached continues to see some good success.  The romantic comedy, with plenty to see, added $13.7 million for the weekend bringing their two week total to $39.7 million.  The duo of Kutcher and Portman is proving to be a successful one as the film is really hitting it big with the romantic movie going crowds.

The Green Hornet also had a great performance for its third weekend at the theaters.  The Seth Rogen action comedy was happy to add $10.5 million to their bottom line for the weekend.  With $78.8 million in total domestic box office earnings in its first three weeks look for The Green Hornet to pass the $100 million mark sometime in mid to late February.

Another note for this weekend was the opening of the film The Mechanic which made $11.5 million and grabbed the fourth box office weekend spot.  The action thriller starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland exceeded expectations for the weekend.  Look for this and all films to see a drop in success next weekend having to compete with the Super Bowl on Sunday.

If you want more, check out the entire list of top ten films at the box office for the weekend of January 30th, 2011 below.

Weekend Box Office Results for January 23rd, 2011

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Happy chilly Monday morning to all of you ConsumeU students out there.  Hopefully you had a chance to head to the theaters this weekend to check out some of the great films that currently showing.  I also want to give a big congrats to the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers who are headed to the Super Bowl in two weeks.  Should be a great game.  If you want to know what happened at the box office this weekend check out some of the top performers below.

Grabbing the first place box office position for the weekend was the romantic comedy No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.  The Ivan Reitman film pulled in just over $20 million in its first box office weekend which was right in line with expectations.  The word of mouth is pretty good on this one and it is a great movie to take your significant other to.

In its second weekend The Green Hornet was able to hang onto the number two box office position for the weekend. The superhero comedy starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Christopher Waltz  brought their two week earnings number to $63.4 million by adding $18.1 million last weekend.   Although this film is performing well it will be difficult to top Set Rogen’s highest grossing film Knocked Up which earned $149 million.

Coming in third this weekend but losing a lot of momentum is The Dilemma starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.  The word of mouth on this film is mixed but it was able to add $9.7 million bringing the films two week earnings to $33.4 million.   Look for this film to continue its slide down the earnings chart over the following weeks.

If case you were wondering where The Company Men and The Way Back were on the earnings charts, both of these films were limited releases so they didn’t have the potential to earn enough to make the top ten list.  As always you can see the entire top ten list for the weekend of January 23rd below.

Weekend Box Office Results for January 16th, 2011

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day all you fine ConsumeU students.  The campus was busy last week and we weren’t able to provide our weekly box office update so please accept our deepest apologies.

This weekend the top film at the box office was The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Christopher Waltz.  The story based on the 1966′ superhero brought in $34 million in its first weekend.  The film was directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind) and did a great job showing respect to the original character.  Seth Rogen not only acted in the film but also was responsible for the writing as well.  If you are looking for a fun action film check out The Green Hornet.

Grabbing the second place spot for the weekend was The Dilemma also in its debut weekend. The Dilemma stars the two comedic actors Vince Vaughn and Kevin James.   The comedy brought in $17.4 million for the three day weekend but the reviews for this film are very mixed.  The Dilemma is directed by the talented Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code, Cinderella Man and A Beautiful Mind).  Check out this film if you are looking for some silly physical comedy.

Staying strong in its fourth box office week, True Grit grabbed the third position for the weekend.  The Coen Brothers have to be happy with the success of their highest grossing film as it added another $9 million bringing the four week total to $126.4 million.  True Grit stars Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon and has generated quite a buzz among moviegoers.  Look for continued success from this one as the word of mouth is quite good on this action film.

Those are your top three films for the weekend of January 16th, 2011.  Check out the table below for the entire top ten list of movies at the box office over the weekend.  Those of you looking to head to the theaters this weekend be sure to stop back at ConsumeU for the Friday previews of The Company Men (Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones) and No Strings Attached (Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher).

Weekend Box Office Results for January 2nd, 2011

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

The last weekend of 2010 is in the books and because there were no new powerhouse movies to compete it would be up to the previous holiday releases to fight it out for the box office winner.  For the second weekend in a row the box office was won by Little Fockers which added $26 million bringing their two week gross earnings to $103.1 million.  Little Fockers is the third installment of the holiday movie storyline starring Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro and Owen Wilson.

Giving Little Fockers some healthy competition this weekend was the latest Coen Brothers movie True Grit starring Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges.  True Grit, also in its second weekend at the box office, brought in another $24.5 million brining their two week total to $86.8 million.  For the Coen Brothers True Grit is the highest grossing movie they have ever directed surpassing No Country For Old Men which topped out at $74.3 million.

TRON: Legacy appears to still have some momentum behind it as it grabbed the third box office position for the weekend.  The fantasy sequel made an additional $18.3 million in its third weekend brining the three week total to $130.9 million.  The film stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and is getting great reviews and much support from the TRON junkies.

Weekend Box Office Results for December 26th, 2010

Monday, December 27th, 2010

The holiday weekend provided a great opportunity for moviegoers to take in some of the entertaining films currently at the box office.  The weekend box office was dominated by Little Fockers starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro bringing in $34 million during the opening three day weekend.   The opening, while strong, was not as strong as the previous release of Meet the Fockers in 2004 which made $70 million in its opening weekend.

Grabbing the second place position at the box office was the debut of True Grit, the Coen Brothers movie starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld.   True Grit was the best opening for a Coen Brothers’ film of all time making just over $25 million in its opening weekend.  True Grit is a remake of 1969 film starring the western bad boy, John Wayne.  Look for continued success from True Grit over the following weeks.

Coming in third for the weekend box office dollar was TRON: Legacy starring Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde.  TRON: Legacy added $20 million to bring the two week box office earnings total to $88.3 million.  The TRON fans are still coming out to support the second installment to the TRON storyline so look for this film to cross the $100 million mark next weekend.

On a side note the star studded How Do You Know with Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson continues its pathetic box office performance.  Only in its second weekend, How Do You Know brought in a sparse $3.7 million bringing the two week total to $15 million.  Not a great outlook for a film that had a budget over $100 million.

Below are the top ten current movies at the box office for the weekend of December 26th, 2010.

Weekend Box Office Results for December 19th, 2010

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Heading into the holiday week many moviegoers headed to the theater to catapult the domestic box office earnings over the $10 billion dollar mark for the year.  As expected TRON: Legacy dominated the box office earnings by hauling in over $43 million in its opening weekend.  Disney is quite pleased with the opening weekend as the hardcore TRON fans seemed to enjoy the sequel starring Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund.  Look for this film to continue performing well with the male crowd in their 20’s during the upcoming weeks.

Grabbing the second place spot for the three day weekend was Yogi Bear starring Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake and Anna Faris.  The film brought in just over $16 million during the opening weekend and should have a little strength left during the upcoming holiday weeks.  The film will have to compete for the family box office dollars with Disney’s Tangled.

Settling into the third spot for the weekend was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader pulling in another $12 million bringing the films two week total to $42.7 million.  The fantasy film starring Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley performed well considering the fantasy films TRON: Legacy and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I both providing healthy competition.

The star studded film How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson didn’t have enough to bring audiences out for the opening weekend only generating $7.6 million.  That cash won’t even pay the salary of one of the actors identified above.  Time will tell if couples will head out to the theaters over the following weeks to help this film hit its numbers.

Check out the entire top ten list for the box office below.

Weekend Box Office Results for December 12th, 2010

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Another great weekend of movies wrapped up on the 12th and the competition for the box office dollars was fierce.  Grabbing the first place spot was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which was the third installment of the Narnia series.  The film pulled in just over $24 million for the three days of its opening weekend.  The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is expected to slow a bit with Disney’s highly anticipated Tron: Legacy being released this weekend.

The second place box office position for the weekend was won by the The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.  The Tourist opened pretty much as expected bringing in $16.5 million in the first three days of its release.  The star power definitely brought moviegoers out to see the film but the reviews and storyline might not be enough to keep the momentum.

Families are loving Disney’s Tangled starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.  Now in its third weekend, Tangled added $14.3 million to its bottom line brining the three week total to $115.4 million.  Tangled should continue to perform well over the following weeks as the reviews have been great and the holidays should provide for some excellent family movie time.

Below is the entire top ten list for the weekend of December 12th, 2010.  Tune in on Friday as we preview Tron: Legacy, Yogi Bear and How Do You Know.

Weekend Box Office Results for December 5th, 2010

Monday, December 6th, 2010

This weekend saw a very small offering of new films as some of the heavyweights battled it out for the all mighty box office dollar.  Coming in number one this weekend was Disney’s Tangled starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi.  In only its second weekend at the box office Tangled brought in another $21 million to bring the domestic grand total very close to $100 million.  The film is performing very well with families looking to get out for some entertainment prior to the busy holiday weeks ahead.

Grabbing the second spot at the box office this weekend was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part I.  The film which started out incredibly well has slowed a bit in its third box office weekend bringing in $16 million for the weekend and close to $250 million for the three week total.  Overall Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part I is setting up its sequel quite well and has some strong earning potential left in it.

Cher and Christina Aguilera are proving to be quite a duo in their hit film Burlesque which came in third in the box office this weekend.  Only in its second weekend, Burlesque grabbed another $6 million bringing their two week total to $27 million.  Burlesque has carved out a nice niche of viewers allowing it to be successful among some of the bigger films like Tangled and Harry Potter that are currently out.

Take a look at the entire top ten list for the weekend of December 5th, 2010 below.  Check in on Friday for your weekly ConsumeU movie preview as we have some great previews coming just for you.  The films being released on Friday December 10th include: The Tourist, The Tempest, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Fighter.

Weekend Box Office Results for November 28th, 2010

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Grabbing the first place spot for the three day portion of the holiday weekend was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I adding $49 million to bring their two week total to $219 million.  Although this successful film was predicted to take the first spot for the weekend, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I didn’t outperform Disney’s Tangled as much as anticipated.

Disney’s Tangled took second place at the box office during it’s opening weekend making $48 million.  The animated classic tells the story of princess Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) and her quest for freedom from her tower of solitude.  The performance of Tangled outpaced the predictions which is great news for Disney.

Grabbing the third spot was the animated hit Megamind adding another $12.6 million to their four week total.  Megamind which stars Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell has brought in just over $130 million in its first four weeks at the box office.  As predicted this weekend was a great weekend for families to head to theaters which is evident by the top three performers.

The other opening films for the weekend were Burlesque ($11.9 million), Love and Other Drugs ($9.7 million) and Faster ($8.5 million).  Check out all of the top ten performers from the weekend in the chart below.

Weekend Box Office Results for November 21st, 2010

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

One of the easiest predictions of the year was that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I would dominate the box office for its opening weekend.  The only question that needed answering was how much would it make.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I had an incredible weekend bringing in just over $125 million with its Friday opening.  This figure outpaced all of the previous Harry Potter releases with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire being the closest second bringing in $102 million on its opening weekend.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I was not the highest earning opening weekend film of the year because it was beat out by Iron Man 2 which made $128 million.

Those that weren’t looking to join the teenage crowds pouring into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I went to see the animated comedy Megamind starring Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt.  The movie, now in its third weekend, just broke the $100 million mark with the $16 million addition of this weekend.  This film should have another few weeks of success to look forward to with the holiday week coming.

The third place finisher of the weekend was Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington.  The action thriller now in its second weekend added $13 million to bringing the movies two week total to just over $41 million.   The movie clearly benefited from being in a different demographic category than the top two films.

Check out the top ten performing films from the weekend in the chart below.

With the holidays just ahead this week will be a great one for new movie releases.  Look for these great films to hit theaters on Wednesday of this week: Disney’s Tangled starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera, Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, and finally Faster starring Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton.  With this diverse offering there is certainly something to see for everyone.
